The place of encounter
We begin the second part of our exploration of the Exodus story. Chapter 19 of Exodus serves as a link between the narrative of the actual exit from Egypt and the time at the foot of Mount Sinai where God makes Himself known by His presence and by the revelation of His commandments.
This is the place where Moses first encountered God in the burning bush and the place to which God said 'As a sign, I will bring you back to this mountain'. Nick reflects on the key verses (19:4-6), which capture the essence of all that God has done and plans to do among His people.
'You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.'
