E100 Bible Challenge

We have just started the E100 Bible challenge – a six month bible reading programme that take us through the whole bible story of God’s plan for salvation from genesis to Revelation. The reading plan cover 100 ’essential’ readings that enable us to gain a clear understanding of the unfolding revelation of God’s plan. Each week there are bible readings for our personal devotional time and a companion study book to be used with the readings. Our small groups meet midweek for further study and sharing and Sunday morning and evening the sermons address the core focus of the week’s readings. Preacher: Revd Nick Dawson. Bible passages: Genesis 12:1-7 & 32:7-12. Nick explores the life that is built on the promises of God – life lived in the light of God’s purposes for us. So often, when we seek to know God’s purpose for our life, we also want to know all the detail – but the life of faith calls us to seek first a life lived in relationship with God who leads us in His paths. The story of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob shows us how even weak human beings, once they focus on who God is and His promises, can find their strength in His sufficiency.

The circle of God’s love

Preacher: Revd Nick Dawson. Bible passages: Amos 5:1-6 & 11-27 Matt 7:7-12. The circle of God’s love includes everything that is life-giving – the boundaries of God’s love are not to hem us in, but to show us what makes for life. Everything outside is that which takes away life or degrades. Yet, since the fall, human beings have wanted to stretch the boundaries to embrace what we ‘feel’ will be good; we have a huge propensity to want to do things our way. In Matthew 7, Jesus refers to just two ways of living – not many ways; the broad road or the narrow road. The broad road is permissive, promising freedom and self determination, but ends in destruction; the narrow road, with its single focus on God’s path, leads to life. The pattern of human history reveals that living outside of God’s love and purposes leads to to disaster. But God, in His mercy, does not sit back and let us go our own way without also opening our eyes to the reality of the consequences. The history of Israel shows how God turns the hearts of His people back to Himself through their coming to a time of crisis – (‘the kindness of God leads to repentance’ Rom 2:4) to a point of realisation that their way is not life-giving and to a point of repentance, returning and restoration.

Is our nation moving into a time of reaping what we have sown – a time of the foundations being shaking – a time of crisis, of revelation that our way is not working? Surely this is a time to ‘seek the Lord and live’ (Amos 5:6).

Jesus – Light of Life

Preacher: Revd Nick Dawson. Bible passages: Luke 14:14-24 & John 1:1-14. Advent is a season for taking stock of our lives – ensuring that Jesus has first place in our life. John speaks of Jesus as the Light of Life – yet, when so many things compete for that first place, for first claim on our time and energy, it can so easily be that the light of Jesus burns dim in our heart. When other things usurp the primacy of place that should be Christ’s alone, life becomes dis-ordered; our perspectives become those of this world rather than those of God’s Kingdom. This Advent, Nick encouraged us to commit together to spend time with Jesus and in God’s Word each day; intentionally to give Him the first fruits of our time and energy. Doing the E100 programme together is one way of strengthening our daily devotional time with God, by which He nourishes, guides and directs us in His purposes.

Seven Essential Kingdom Values

As these are embedded into our lives so they become the touch-stone for the things that really matter; the things we value determine our priorities – what we do and how we live our lives. Therefore it is essential that our values reflect the heart of Christ.

1 Value the Kingdom Prioritise Jesus’ priority Do what Jesus said to do

“Seek first the Kingdom of God” Matthew 6:33

2 Value prayer A culture of prayer first In all things

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests let your requests to God” Philippians 4:6

3 Value the Holy Spirit’s resources Live in God’s enabling / empowering - God-centred living

“Look to the Lord and His strength, seek His face always” Psalm 105:4

4 Value people People matter to God Investing in people for the Kingdom

“… to love your neighbour as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices” Mark 12:3

5 Value God’s revelation Seeing what the Father sees Recognising His purposes

He has given us every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 1:3

6 Value God’s calling He has shaped you to serve Him

Using the gifts you have received, faithfully administering the grace of God given to you. 1 Peter 4:10

7 Value each other’s gifts We are all part of Christ’s body

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. For we are the Body of Christ 1Co 12:27

These seven values are foundational for Kingdom living and have an immediate impact on our life and ministry. The expression of God’s Kingdom is validated as we live lives that are Christ-centred and God dependent.
