The influence of our fallen ‘flesh’ life is powerful, hostile to God and contrary to His purposes. As disciples of Christ we are given grace to live a new life orientated towards God – but it not a passive orientation – it requires that we do certain things to ensure we maintain a Godward focus. Dallas Willard has rightly said: ‘Grace is is opposed to earning but isn’t opposed to effort’. If we make no effort to follow Christ’s teaching, we can expect to succumb again to the influence of the flesh.
