Bible passage: 2 John. I have just renewed my contract with the gym, but that does not meant that when I wake the following morning I will be fit and sporting a ‘six-pack’ – some effort on my part is needed. So too with our discipleship – it is something that requires daily attention and spiritual exercise. Whilst grace is opposed to earning merit, it is not opposed to disciplined effort. John writes: ‘This is love – that we walk in obedience to His commands’. In our discipleship there must be a correlation between the faith we profess and the life we live. Much discipleship today seems to display a pick and mix approach to following Jesus’ teachings, but a discipleship that does not embrace obedience to Christ has no validity. John would have been reflecting on Jesus’ words: ‘If anyone loves me he will obey my teaching.’ Jesus also said: ‘Whoever does not love me will not obey my teaching’. (John 14:23-24) Nick challenged us during Advent to reflect on our walk with God and seek ways to deepen our walk by renewing some important spiritual disciplines.
